The news can be fast-paced and may influence investment decisions. Fortunately, there are several free and paid sources available. Let's take a closer look at some of the top news sources for financial traders. These resources are designed to be easy to use and provide comprehensive coverage of market developments. These sources include:

Bloomberg: The largest newsroom in the world, Bloomberg is the most widely used source for financial news. Its free mobile application lets you keep up with the latest market developments with personalized news and real-time alerts. It also includes full-screen charts for quick comparisons and evaluations of stocks.

The Wall Street Journal: Although not available in real-time, the Wall Street Journal's website offers in-depth financial news. The site is bursting with thought-provoking opinions, insightful journalism, and useful tools for tracking your investments. You can access Wall Street Journal articles for free if you subscribe to MarketWatch.

Bloomberg: A financial trader must follow the latest financial news to stay up-to-date. Despite the vast quantity of news sources available on the Internet, not all of them offer the kind of comprehensive coverage of market conditions that financial traders need. Instead, financial traders should follow the following top news sources. Bloomberg: Bloomberg is a leading source of business news and contains the latest information on major companies. The site also offers industry-specific news as well as market data, sentiment analysis, and a number of other tools.

One of the most common sources is to follow analysts on social media. These analysts report on companies that they follow and provide fast and reliable information. Most day traders keep a constant feed from these analysts on their computer or mobile device. These feeds inform them of any changes in the market and about companies that they may be interested in.

The news cycle feeds into before and after-market trading quickly, so it is imperative to know how these sources work. A search for "interest rate change news" on Yahoogle will yield up to 30 million results. This is a ridiculous amount of information to take in. However, business television remains an important source of news, and traders should follow the employees of companies they trade.

There are also several subscription services that deliver news about the stock market. Many of these are free, while others require an email signup. Benzinga Pro, for example, offers a free news feed and in-depth analysis. It also has an online chat service with analysts, which is invaluable for day traders. However, if you don't have the time to sign up for these services, you can always listen to podcasts of news about the market.

News is one of the most important day trading resources, but it's important to choose the best sources. News is essential to all types of trading, and traders need to be able to receive it immediately.

Fortunately, there are many sources of this news on the web. However, not all of them are updated frequently. Here are seven reliable sources that update often and do not include irrelevant information. Bloomberg is the ultimate source of financial news and is well-categorized by region.

There are many trading platforms available on the web that are designed to help you stay updated on the latest news. Most of these platforms include a news section that allows you to customize the news feed so that you get just the news you're interested in. For example, you can create custom news feeds for individual companies, or broad market news.

Moreover, you'll find news on the currencies you're trading. For example, if a country's central bank appoints a new chair, the price of its currency will move. This news is often timely and can affect trading. However, it's critical to distinguish fact from rumor. Rumors on economic data can surface hours or minutes before the official release and can impact market sentiment.

While it's important to check subscription-based sources of news, free publications are also a reliable option. The popular Seeking Alpha is an example of a free publication, though some of their more sophisticated content requires a paid subscription.

Economic releases that affect the United States often have the biggest impact on forex, and you can trade those by watching for periods of consolidation before a big number is released. Then, you can trade the breakout after the big number comes out. The use of indicators is also crucial in selecting the optimal events.

While Forex news trading may seem straightforward, you need to keep in mind that the high stakes involved in news trading greatly increase your risk of losing a significant amount of money. You will also need to make fast decisions as the news can lead to sharp price fluctuations. Therefore, you should work with a reliable broker to minimize the risk of slippage.

The news that influences forex trading can be confusing for newcomers. To make it simpler, consider reading a news website that tracks news about forex. Forex Factory publishes many news sites and ranks them based on their impact: high (red), medium (orange), and low (yellow). There is also a forex forum on this site, where members post their own trades. This way, you can copy what others are doing.

In addition to watching news on forex, you can also pay attention to speeches from government officials, geopolitical events, and major economic data releases. These events are of particular importance because they can determine the direction of a currency's value. While trading the news is not for everyone, it can provide lucrative trading opportunities.

Brokers have gone online, with their platforms providing all kinds of financial instruments like stocks, commodities, bonds, ETFS, and futures.

Traditionally, when a buyer wanted to invest money in stocks, he used to call his brokerage firm and asked for putting in a request to buy stocks of a given company for a specified amount.

The broker would then let him know the market price of the stocks and would confirm the order.

After the user confirmed his trading account, the broker's fees and the time period required for the order, the order would get placed on the stock exchange.

Key Points

When a user places the order for buying any particular stock on an online platform, his order gets saved in the database of the trading member platform and the exchange platform.

If the price matches with the user’s demands and he confirms the order, then the process is validated by both the parties.

Online platforms provide a far more inexpensive experience, which attracts a majority of traders and investors.

As is obvious, this method had multiple steps and was pretty long drawn. Not surprisingly, online trading platforms have taken over the entire trading landscape because of their advantages:

The users can open, manage and close accounts sitting at their homes, working on a device with internet.

Transactions can be made much more easily.

Multiple financial products, which earlier needed to be bought from specific places or banks, can now be bought and sold online, which also reduces the the role of an intermediary and saves time.

The money used is real and the user gets to analyse and choose from the various options of stocks and products available.

When a user places the order for buying any particular stock on an online platform, his order gets saved in the database of the trading member platform and the exchange platform. This data is then used to look across all platforms selling that particular stock and display the result with the best price available. If the price matches with the user’s demands and he confirms the order, then the process is validated by both the parties. After all that is completed, the broker usually has three days to complete the settlement of the money, and hence, the money is transferred to your account.

Many online trading platforms provide analysis of stocks, which helps the users to find the status of the stock market. This also helps them predict the situation of stocks in upcoming days and shape their decisions. Online platforms attract users through ease of use and reduced commission fees. Ultimately, having a properly funded account is essential to execute trades smoothly on a platform.

Offline vs Online Trading

As online trading increasingly widens its roots into the modern trading market, retail trading finds its place in local stock exchanges and offices. The impact of online trading over offline has been noticeable with the evolution of computers and internet, in the past two decades. Online trading does provide a lot of advantages which are difficult to achieve offline.

The cost of the stocks and various financial products has reduced significantly. Online platforms provide a far more inexpensive experience, which attracts a majority of traders and investors. This has become possible because online trading eliminates the majority of the middlemen, which in turn, decreases the extra added price of commissions over these products.

Online trading is much faster as compared to offline trading. It is also easier to find the price of securities when the information is flowing electronically. Receiving updates regarding price changes in the form of price alerts, makes it easy to transact shares. Thus, reducing the processing time. It also enables buying products from any location in the world. Hence, it is not necessary to go to a definite place to trade.

As online trading platforms are surplus in number, the competition between them results in a benefit for the trader or investor. These platforms, for better marketing and gaining greater users, release offers and discounts which enables the users to buy products at lesser prices or sell them at higher prices, ultimately, benefitting the users. This happens, but rarely in offline trading.

Wrapping Up

Online trading is electronic trading with the help of internet and computers.

The user can search for stocks available on different exchanges, decide on the broker who offers the best price and an intuitive trading experience.

You can choose a trading platform and start placing various types of share trading orders.

The order for stocks is stored in a database which after verification from the buyer and the seller, is proceeded for the transaction of money.

These platforms provide various offers for marketing and gaining users, eventually benefitting the users a lot which seldom happens in offline trading.

Reduction of cost of products, reduced role of intermediaries, increased competition among brokers, etc. are some of the major impacts of online trading.

Wading through all this can be a daunting task, so we've done much of the work for you. We put these U.S.-based brokers through a comprehensive review process that included hands-on research to determine the best trading platforms in the industry.

Why We Chose It

Fidelity is on a multi-year run as our best overall brokerage account due to its client-focused approach. Other brokers are closing the gap, but Fidelity remains our overall pick for investors. In addition to refusing payment for order flow, Fidelity keeps costs low, provides exceptional tools to help investors manage and analyze their portfolios, and continually improves its platforms to make things easier for investors and traders. One example of this is Fidelity's cash sweep of uninvested cash into money market funds, which gives clients another source of modest returns in their portfolios. Fidelity also has excellent order execution and shares the revenue from the stock loan program back to clients. These features, along with Fidelity's commitment to lowering costs for customers while improving returns, are the key reasons it continues to be our selection for the best overall online brokerage.

Why We Chose It

TD Ameritrade’s strength in investor education flows naturally to TDA being one of the smoothest introductions to the market for new investors. There are, of course, brokers that do it cheaper or flashier, but TD Ameritrade has the resources, range of offerings, and the support that will help new investors become better over the long-term. Major factors in choosing the TD Ameritrade brokerage account include the expanded learning pathways covering everything from beginning to invest to advanced trading, and the ability to paper trade on the platform without making any commitment. TD Ameritrade makes a very compelling case for being the brokerage account that new investors choose because it manages to be a comprehensive and robust platform without being overwhelming.

Pros

Extensive education section with learning pathways designed with beginners in mind

TD Ameritrade: Best Mobile App

Account Minimum: $0

Fees: Free stock, ETF, and per-leg options trading commissions. $0.65 per options contract.

Why We Chose It

TD Ameritrade has two apps that together form the best overall mobile app offering. The thinkorswim mobile app is designed to make it easy for traders to manage existing positions and open new ones. The mobile app's workflow is intuitive and powerful enough to use as the primary trading platfom—potentially bringing about a generation of app-only traders who never touch the more robust, downloadable versions. You may find the standard TD Ameritrade app superior to the full website as it streamlines the entire experience to the necessities while nesting all the other functions into a convenient, mobile package.

Pros

Mobile trading on TD Ameritrade mobile is more streamlined than the website

Trading from charts on mobile is simple in both apps

Dual apps let you choose the one that best fits your needs

Cons

Some tools found only on one platform

Wide menu of account types can make choosing the right one challenging

tastyworks: Best Broker for Options

Account Minimum: $0

Fees: $0.00 stock trades, $1.00 to open options trades $0.00 to close

Why We Chose It

Tastyworks remains very competitive on price when it comes to trading options contracts. Still, what makes it our pick as the best broker for options traders are the flexible tools, educational content, and intuitive platforms. Tastyworks isn't the broker you start options trading on—it is the one you end up choosing once you've decided options trading is all you want to do. Tastyworks is optimized for this task in a way that few other brokers are. Options traders will find all the tools and analysis they need during trading sessions, and they can spend their downtime consuming options-related content to get ready for the next session.

Pros

All the options tools you need

Charting is tweaked to options, allowing you to analyze the risk profiles of the combined position

Fantastic library of original, options focused content

Cons

If you are coming to tastyworks to trade something other than options, you are in the wrong place

There is no fixed income trading (outside of ETFs that contain bonds)

Additional portfolio analysis requires setting up an account with the Quiet Foundation, also part of the tastytrade empire

Fidelity: Best Broker for Low Costs

Account Minimum: $0

Fees: $0 for stock/ETF trades, $0 plus $0.65/contract for options trade

Why We Chose It

Over the last year, we have re-evaluated what it means to be our best low-cost online brokerage. There are online brokers that cost next to nothing to trade on. That was all it took to walk away with this category in the past, even if a broker had a limited range of assets, a lack of useful tools, or a weak trading platform—or potentially all three, provided the price was cheap enough. We've adjusted our scoring to look for low-cost in comparison to the value delivered. While this approach to the data ended up with Fidelity (our best overall broker) on top, the winning factors over close competitors were the cash management options on idle cash and the excellent portfolio analysis tools that consolidate outside accounts. If you don't trade a large number of options and you don’t require futures or cryptocurrency, then Fidelity offers the most bang for your buck.

Pros

Low costs overall and a lack of many common fees

Strong account management options, including a sweep program into money market funds

Transparent pricing disclosure

Excellent execution quality

Cons

No future, commodities, or cryptocurrency

Only available to U.S. residents

A high fee ($32.95) for live broker assistance

Interactive Brokers: Best for Advanced Traders

Account Minimum: $0

Fees: Maximum $0.005 per share for Pro platform or 1% of trade value, $0 for IBKR Lite

Why We Chose It

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) remains our top pick for advanced day traders, continuing a multi-year run. In this category, we assume advanced day traders are willing to bring third-party solutions to make up for any gaps in backtesting and automation in exchange for IBKR's international exchanges, an extensive selection of stocks on the easy-to-borrow list, and incredibly low margin rates. Advanced cryptocurrency-focused day traders are now able to engage in direct coin trading as of April 2022, and everyone else will find that Interactive Brokers has all the assets, reach, and tools they need, along with very attractive margin rates. Interactive Brokers is one of the best trading platforms overall, so it is a natural fit for advanced traders.

Pros

Superior order execution

Contingent orders for every conceivable situation

Low margin interest rates

Cryptocurrency joins a long list of tradable assets

Cons

IBKR's SmartRouter not available to IBKR Lite clients

TWS can take some time to learn

No backtesting of custom trading algorithms or automated trading

Interactive Brokers: Best for International Trading

Account Minimum: $0

Fees: Maximum $0.005 per share for Pro platform or 1% of trade value, $0 for IBKR Lite

Why We Chose It

Interactive Brokers is in no danger of being unseated as our pick for best online broker for international trading. Interactive Brokers dominates the scoring in this category simply by virtue of its access to 150- markets in 33 countries—all accessible through a single account. What's more, Interactive Broker gives you the ability to trade 23 currencies in 115 different pairs in addition to the broker’s robust order selection and trading tools. The breadth and depth combine to enable traders to set up positions across markets and asset classes in a way that no other broker can currently match. If you are interested in international trading, Interactive Brokers gives you one of the best brokerage accounts available for tapping global markets.

Pros

Interactive Brokers is unparalleled in its market reach and asset variety

Trader Workstation (TWS) is a powerful tool with a high level of customization

The direct access to exchanges worldwide allows for 24-hour trading

Cons

International trading on IBKR works best through TWS, which can be intimidating for non-traders

Interactive Brokers fee-based pricing structure is tiered and can be confusing (although the fees are modest)

Charles Schwab: Best for ETFs

Account Minimum: $0

Fees: Free stock and ETF trading, $0.65 per options contract

Why We Chose It

Charles Schwab is a full-service investment firm that ranks highly across many of our scoring categories. Schwab frequently ranks in the top three throughout our categories, only to be edged out by slightly more focused offerings. Still, when it comes to ETFs, Schwab continues to be our top pick. This is largely on the strength of its ETF screener combined with the general quality of its overall offering, including education around ETF investing and portfolio analysis tools for everyday investors. Schwab makes the process of investing in ETFs simple while still providing excellent research and multi-criteria screening for investors who want that depth prior to making a decision. All of these factors combine to make Charles Schwab the best brokerage account for ETF investors.

Pros

StreetSmart Edge ETF screener has 150+ screening criteria

The StreetSmart Edge platform is customizable and robust

Schwab is an excellent broker overall beyond the ETF specific functionality

Cons

To get the best ETF screener, investors need to work through StreetSmart Edge

Outside of ETFs, Schwab can be a bit pricey on options, and futures are traded through a separate platform—something to keep in mind if you intend to trade in those assets

Final Verdict

Ultimately, choosing the best brokerage platform is about who you are as an investor now and what type of investor you aspire to be in the future. Once you have answered these fundamental questions, our ranking can help you narrow down the field. For example, if you are just starting out as an aspiring options trader, you may be better served by reviewing our picks for options traders rather than going through the general best for beginners picks. As you grow as an investor, however, you may also find that your goals and approach to the market have changed—maybe you desire a more robust platform with more assets and exchanges, or maybe you are looking to simplify things and take a more passive approach. The best thing about the high level of competition in the brokerage space is the number of brokers with solutions to serve your needs, no matter how those change over time.

How Should You Choose a Brokerage Account?

When choosing an online broker, you have to think about your immediate needs as an investor or trader. If you are a beginner, you may need a broker who has great educational material about the stock market and other financial markets. This is one of the key reasons TD Ameritrade is our top pick for beginners. A number of brokers also allow for paper trading prior to funding an account, giving you an opportunity to learn the platform, sample the available assets, and test out the trading experience without risking real capital.

What Is an Online Brokerage Account and How Does it Work?

A brokerage account is a financial account similar in function to the accounts you have with a bank. With a brokerage account, you deposit funds with an investment firm (the brokerage). This is usually done by a transfer from your existing bank account. Once funds are added to your brokerage account, you can put the money to work using the brokerage's trading platform to invest those funds in the market. The assets you buy with your cash can be anything offered by that brokerage, including stocks, bonds, ETFs, and even cryptocurrency.

Your online brokerage account will display your holdings (the assets you've purchased) as well as your cash balance (your buying power). If you invest in something that gains in value, you can sell it and the profits will be deposited in your online brokerage account. From there, you can place another trade or even transfer the funds out to your regular bank account to use elsewhere. Some brokerage accounts even allow you to earn interest on your uninvested cash.

How Much Money Do You Need to Start Investing?

There is no longer a real minimum to start investing in the financial markets. With many brokers offering accounts with no required minimums and access to fractional shares, you can start investing with any amount of money. If you don't have a lot of money to invest, however, it will influence how you approach the market. Although you could invest $1 in fractional shares of a specific stock, the better approach with limited capital is to use ETFs. Index tracking ETFs, for example, offer greater diversification for your dollar than a single company stock because every share (and fractional share) of the ETF replicates an index made up of many companies in many different industries. You could also consider using options to leverage your dollars with a directional bet on the market or a specific stock, but this is a strategy best reserved for risk capital—not the whole of your limited investment capital.

When investing with small sums, consistency is the key to building wealth. If you can regularly put a set amount of money into the market—even $10 a week—you will be surprised at how quickly it begins to grow. This consistency also helps to smooth market effects, as you will be buying dips and peaks as the market goes up and down.

Can You Invest With a Small Amount of Money?

Many online brokers allow for small minimum deposits which can be a great alternative for those with limited funds. Account minimums (if any) are displayed at the top of our reviews, as well as in our selection of the best platforms for different types of investors. If you are looking for more general guidance on investing with limited capital, check out our article on smart investing on a small budget.

Do Brokers Offer Mobile Platforms?

Some online brokers have incredible mobile apps delivering nearly all the features that their desktop counterparts do. Options traders, for example, will find the tastyworks app to be a streamlined version of the tastyworks desktop platform. TD Ameritrade customers can pick between the more robust thinkorswim mobile app aimed at traders or the standard TD Ameritrade app for less active investors, with the features of each adjusted for the intended user.

Can you lose money in a brokerage account?

Yes, you can. It is a reality of the market that no reward comes without risk. You can lose money buying a bad investment, but you can also lose by buying a good investment at the wrong time. When it comes to the financial markets, there are endless possibilities for making and losing money. Unless all the funds in your brokerage account are sitting in uninvested cash, there is a risk you will lose money. Another way of looking at that, however, is that a brokerage account sitting full of uninvested cash isn't at risk of making any money either. You can use strategies like asset allocation and diversification to reduce the risk of you losing money, but you will never fully eliminate it without also eliminating your chances of making a decent return.

Can I buy stocks without a broker?

Yes, you can actually buy stocks without a broker, but it is not a common approach these days. Some companies still offer direct stock purchase plans that allow you to buy shares directly from the company. Companies administer these plans according to internal rules, and some are only open to company employees. You need to contact companies to find out whether they offer a direct stock purchase plan and what the terms and conditions are. These plans initially helped investors avoid brokerage fees, but the rise of online discount brokers with zero fees has removed this barrier, making the direct stock purchase plan somewhat of a relic.

The Difference Between Investing and Trading

Another important thing to consider is the distinction between investing and trading. When people talk about investing they generally mean buying assets to hold for a long period of time. The goal of investing is to gradually build wealth and reach your retirement goals. Conversely, trading involves short-term strategies that maximize returns on a short-term basis, such as daily or monthly. Trading is generally considered riskier than investing.

All these factors are worth considering before choosing an online broker. Do you want to trade or invest? Do you want a great mobile app to check your portfolio wherever you are? What types of assets are you looking to invest in? Answering these questions is not always easy. For more support on how to choose a broker, you can check out our guide to choosing a stock broker. Once you've made a decision on a broker, you can also check out our guide to opening a brokerage account.

According to Jack Schwager, the truth is that in order to become a successful trader in the long run, it is essential to put in some dedicated effort to improve trading skills.

Schwager says amateur traders tend to believe it is just a matter of finding the right formula or a single right technique to become a successful trader, which is in fact far from truth.

Famed financial author and futures & hedge funds expert Jack Schwager defines a stock trader as someone who is as likely to go short as long, and who is willing to change positions with more frequency than someone who might be called a long-term investor.

“If one is making quick decisions on when to go in, out or reverse positions, that’s a trader, as opposed to a long-term investor who says, ‘I want to have 50 per cent of my money in equities. I’m going to buy an index. I’m going to stay for 40 years’,” Schwager said in an interview whose video is now available on YouTube.

Schwager is an eminent industry expert and author of a number of critically acclaimed financial books, including
The Market Wizards series. He was one of the founders of Fund Seeder. Previously, he was a partner at a London-based hedge fund advisory firm, the Fortune Group (2001-2010). He has also been a Director of futures research for some of Wall Street’s leading firms.

Mistake that amateur traders make
Schwager says amateur traders tend to believe it is just a matter of finding the right formula or a single right technique to become a successful trader, which is in fact far from truth.

According to him, the truth is that in order to become a successful trader in the long run, it is essential to put in some dedicated effort to improve trading skills.

Find a trading approach that suits you
Schwager says there are many different paths to success in trading, as there is not a single way that works continuously. Even if there was one, it would stop working anyways because everyone would follow it.

“The very first thing one should figure out is the right trading method that suits him, as there is no right size common approach that can guarantee success to everybody,” says he.

“A person has to know whether he is comfortable with fundamental or technical, long term or short term, certain types of markets, wider risk or less risk… You can go through a whole checklist of things and find out it’s different for each individual. It’s a discovery process, an evolutionary process,” he says.

Giving an example, he says Jim Rogers was never able to make money using technical analysis. On the other hand, Martin Schwartz could not profit using fundamental analysis. Yet both of them did very well using the approach each was comfortable with.

“There are people like Jim Rogers who have complete disdain for technical analysis. He’d say the only people he’s met that made money in technical analysis are those who sell their technical analysis services, that’s his take on it. On the other hand, you’ve got people like Martin Schwartz who’ve done phenomenally well using technical analysis and would say: ‘I spent a decade as a fundamental analyst, but I got rich as a technician’,” says he.

Trading approach should have an edge
Schwager says it is important that whatever approach one adopts should have an extra edge that can set him apart from others.

A trading approach may be reasonable, but if it lacks an edge, it may not be able to provide success. “It can make all the sense in the world. On paper, it might sound reasonable, but markets do not pay off for approaches that sound reasonable. They pay off for what works, and what works may often be very counter-intuitive,” he says.

According to Schwager, one needs to have the confidence that the approach he has chosen to follow will work in the long run. This confidence, he says, comes when one starts making more money than what is lost.

"By work, I don’t mean it’s a money machine. I just mean that over time it’s making more than it’s losing. That’s the edge," says he.

Manage risk properly
After developing a method that has an edge and that suits a trader’s personality, the next step should be to plan appropriate risk management.

Schwager says proper risk management is extremely important as traders run the risk of losing a lot of money. A method that has an edge is of no use if risk management is not taken very seriously.

“A good approach could be sabotaged by a few mistakes. You never want that. You never want to be at the mercy of having a few mistakes knock you out of the game,” says he.

Follow strict discipline
Schwager says traders need to follow strict discipline to properly implement their trading strategy. Those who follow a disciplined trading approach are more likely to achieve success in the long run.

“You need the discipline to take your method, with the edge and the risk management, and stay true to it. There are trades that are going to look scary and you’re going to really not want to take them, but if it’s part of your methodology, you take them. There are times your methodology, or your risk management, tells you, ‘here’s where you’re out’. You may hate to get out, but that’s your methodology, that’s your risk management, you get out. You have to be strict on the discipline part,” he says.

Be flexible
Flexibility is another key trait that separates great traders from the ordinary ones, as they’re able to adapt and take decisions according to the prevailing situations.

“That flexibility to be able to change your mind and not hope that your position is right is an essential ingredient," he says.

Importance of sitting still & being patient
Schwager says the key to trading success is the space between trades. Sometimes it’s not just a matter of making the right trade, but also not doing anything even when things aren’t going right. He says there are times when the market is not conducive for making trades and that’s when successful traders show a lot of patience and wait for things to get better.

“When opportunities are not good, simply do not invest or do so very lightly. Instead of losing money, tread water,” he says.

Good and bad trades
Traders make the mistake of distinguishing between good and bad trades by the amount of money the trade has earned.

Any approach that a trader follows gives instances of winning or losing, but if one has an effective approach, he makes more money than he loses, says he.

“If you take a trade that follows your process exactly and if that trade loses money, that is not a bad trade. It’s a bad trade only if you deviate from your process and lose money. I would go further and say if you deviate from your process and make money, it’s still a bad trade. People have to differentiate between trades that are consistent with a winning strategy, and trades that are inconsistent. That’s the mark of good and bad trades,” says he.

Admit to mistakes
Schwager says successful traders have the ability to quickly admit that they’re wrong. Also, regardless of their personality, they are also quite flexible and can adapt to situations. On the contrary, ordinary traders do not show much flexibility.

Bouncing back from failures
Many successful traders have actually had multiple failures in their early trading days, but they managed to bounce back from those failures due to their self-belief.

When most average traders simply give up on trading after experiencing a few rounds of negative experiences, successful traders tend to have absolute belief in their abilities to make things right in the end.

Schwager says every good trading strategy goes through ups and downs and how successfully one deals with these bad times is what would separate them from the rest.

Schwager believes accepting losses as part of the trading game is a critical mind-set that traders must have. When one has this belief built into his mind, it gets easier to deal with small losses decisively and take necessary action to prevent them further.

No loyalty to a particular stock
Successful traders do not show loyalty to any particular stock and treat it merely as a tool to making money.

Schwager says if a trader starts becoming too loyal to a stock, then it could spell danger. He advises them to not hesitate to dump a stock if it is not making money.

Ability to make bold decisions
Successful traders always make tough trading decisions that are contrarian and uncomfortable which an average trader hesitates to take.

Tips for individuals who want to trade

Schwager advises individuals who want to pursue their career as traders to first do extensive reading. He doesn't recommend any book in particular, but encourages individuals to just go and explore different books. Check on the web, go to a library or go to a bookstore, if you can still find one these days. However you do it, just pick up different things. Look at different things. See what they’re saying. Once you figure out where you’re gravitating to, read more on that,” he says.

He also advises traders to start thinking about ideas based on what they have read and how they could implement them in the market.

Then he recommends traders to evolve those ideas into some sort of a methodology for which they can define the rules and come up with a risk management plans.

Traders can practise dummy trading to check whether their methodology has the required edge to become successful.

Finally, once traders feel they have an edge, they can start trading with small amounts of money and implement their strategies. Gradually if one is trading with real money successfully, then one can increase the amount as per his comfort.

Each trader forges their own path, usually by absorbing the knowledge of successful traders that came before them. While no quote or trading tip will make you a successful trader on its own, insights from successful traders can tell you where you should be focusing your attention, and what you should be working on.

Here are four tips from millionaires and successful traders. Most of these quotes come from the Market Wizards book series by Jack D. Schwager. These books look at the diverse trading methods of successful traders and offer a wealth of wisdom for anyone looking to start trading.

Key Takeaways

All of the millionaire traders mentioned here emphasized the importance of handling losses.

Traders need to set realistic expectations for what they can achieve, and they need to know when to cut their losses.

A stop-loss order based on technical indicators is the simplest way to control risk, and position sizing is also important.

Don't Be Afraid to Cut Losses

"If I have positions going against me, I get right out; if they are going for me, I keep them... Risk control is the most important thing in trading. If you have a losing position that is making you uncomfortable, the solution is very simple: get out, because you can always get back in." —Paul Tudor Jones

Loss aversion—an unwillingness to cut a loss—is one of the most common trading problems and can deplete an account quickly. On the flip side, not giving winning trades enough room to run can also be a problem. If you win less than 50% of the time, winners have to be bigger than losers on average. Even if you win more often, strive to keep your average loss smaller than your average win.

Learn Controlled Losing

"You have to learn how to lose; it is more important than learning how to win." —Mark Weinstein

Winning is as much about controlling losses as it is about racking up winning trades. If you make $1,000 one trade, but lose it (or more) the next, you're no better off. But if you can make $1,000, then only lose $700, then make $1,100, then lose $500, you are making progress. Trading is always two steps forward, one step back. Make sure the steps back don't erase everything you have done before.

Manage Your Risk

"Whenever I enter a position, I have a predetermined stop [loss]. That is the only way I can sleep. I know where I’m getting out before I get in. The position size on a trade is determined by the stop [loss], and the stop is determined on a technical basis....I always place my stop beyond some technical barrier." —Bruce Kovner

The stop-loss order is one of the simplest ways to control risk. Under normal market conditions, it will keep your risk limited to a specific amount of capital. With the maximum risk known, you can then assess whether the profit potential of the trade is worth the risk.

Instead of avoiding losses, focus your trading strategy on making your winners bigger than your losers.

Be Realistic

"I don’t think you can consistently be a winning trader if you’re banking on being right more than 50% of the time. You have to figure out how to make money being right only 20 to 30% of the time." —Bill Lipschutz

Does this seem like a strange statement? Recall that, ideally, winning trades should be bigger than losses, even if you do win 50% of the time or more. Most traders are searching for that elusive method where they never lose or can win eight or nine trades out of 10, amassing huge profits in a short amount of time with no risk. But successful trading takes time. There is always a risk, and it needs to be defined and controlled. As soon as you cap your risk, you invite the possibility of losing trades (reaching the stop loss). Ironically, though, that is more likely to make you profitable since the losses are small and controlled.

When creating a trading plan and strategies, analyze them based on worst-case scenarios. Maybe you do tend to win 60% or 70% of the time (not unreasonable), but undoubtedly you will face periods where you only win two to four trades out of 10. How does your system perform then? Does it manage to keep your account steady or profitable? Or does the slower period result in big account losses? Plan for the worst case, assume you will only win 30% or 40% of your trades. In that way, your strategy is more robust, and during the periods where you do win six or seven trades out of 10, you will be a very happy trader.

Millionaire Trading Tips—A Final Word

All these traders discussed losses. Most novice traders like to think about winning or avoiding losses, but controlling risk is even more important. Anyone can make a profit simply because of random price movements. Successful traders focus more on controlling risk than dodging losses. When losing trades come—and they will—the trader only takes one step back, and doesn't erase everything made prior.

Have a trading plan, control risk, and focus on creating strategies that will keep you in the profit or steady even if you only win three or four trades out of 10. Eventually, you may win more than that, but it isn't wise to try to trade based on best-case-scenarios. Plan for the worst and your results will likely be better.

Why Swing Trade?

Swing Trading is a strategy that focuses on taking smaller gains in short term trends and cutting losses quicker. The gains might be smaller, but done consistently over time they can compound into excellent annual returns. Swing Trading positions are usually held a few days to a couple of weeks, but can be held longer.

Swing Trading Strategy

Let's start with the basics of a swing trading strategy. Rather than targeting 20% to 25% profits for most of your stocks, the profit goal is a more modest 10%, or even just 5% in tougher markets.

Those types of gains might not seem to be the life-changing rewards typically sought in the stock market, but this is where the time factor comes in.

The swing trader's focus isn't on gains developing over weeks or months; the average length of a trade is more like 5 to 10 days. In this way, you can make a lot of small wins, which will add up to big overall returns. If you are happy with a 20% gain over a month or more, 5% to 10% gains every week or two can add up to significant profits.

Of course, you still have to factor in losses. Smaller gains can only produce growth in your portfolio if losses are kept small. Rather than the normal 7% to 8% stop loss, take losses quicker at a maximum of 3% to 4%. This will keep you at a 3-to-1 profit-to-loss ratio, a sound portfolio management rule for success. It's a critical component of the whole system since an outsized loss can quickly wipe away a lot of progress made with smaller gains.

Swing trading can still deliver larger gains on individual trades. A stock may exhibit enough initial strength that it can be held for a bigger gain, or partial profits can be taken while giving the remaining position room to run.

Get actionable tips and updates on swing trading every week in IBD's Swing Trading column.

Swing Trading and CAN SLIM

Although the CAN SLIM Investing System is built for longer-term investment periods, its rules can still apply in a swing trading environment.

Take breakouts from consolidations. Prior uptrends are a must. Sideways action that resists giving up much ground is preferred. High Relative Strength Ratings are a key statistic for limiting your universe to the best prospects. And volume gives you confirmation that institutions are accumulating shares. The twist added by swing trading is the timeframe.

Rather than consolidations that are typically five to seven weeks at a minimum, you might be looking at half that time or even less.

The flexibility in looking at shorter time frames comes from lowered profit goals. A prior uptrend of 30% or more needs the longer time frame of a sound base structure before continuing for similar sized gains or better. But if you are looking for a gain of 5% to 10%, the requirements are much less.

By the same token, volume characteristics of a breakout also can have a shortened time frame. Rather than the 50-day moving average of volume as your threshold for heavy turnover, look to the volume of the shorter consolidation area for clues. If the breakout volume can surpass the recent activity, that can be a sufficient confirmation of strength.

Swing Trading vs. Day Trading

Swing trading and day trading may seem like similar practices, but the major differences between the two have a common theme: time.

First, the time frames for holding a trade are different. Day traders are in and out of trades within minutes or hours. Swing trading is generally over days or weeks.

Day traders' shorter time frame means they don't generally hold positions overnight. As a result, they avoid the risk of gaps from news announcements coming in after hours and causing a big move against them. Meanwhile, swing traders have to be wary that a stock could open significantly different from how it closed the day before.

But there is an added risk with the shorter time frame. A wide spread between the bid, the ask and commissions can eat too large a portion of your profits. Swing traders can struggle with this too, but the effect is amplified for the day trader. Day traders can find themselves doing all the work, and the market makers and brokers reap the benefits.

To offset this, day traders are often offered the "opportunity" to leverage their portfolios with more margin, four times the buying power rather than double. Taking larger leveraged positions can increase percentage gains to offset costs. The problem is that no one is right all the time. A lack of focus, discipline, or just plain bad luck can lead to a trade that goes against you in a big way. A bad trade, or string of bad trades, can blow up your account, where the loss to the portfolio is so great the chances of recovery are slim. For a swing trader, a string of losses or a big loss can still have a dramatic effect, but the lower leverage reduces the likelihood that the results wipe out your portfolio.

That leads to another time related difference: the time commitment. Proper day trading requires focus and attention on numerous positions and constantly looking for new potential opportunities throughout the day to replace exited positions. That means it isn't a side job; day trading is your only job.

The extra time commitment of day trading comes with its own risk. Not having a steady paycheck makes a day trader's income reliant on trading success. That can add an extra level of stress and emotions to trading, and more emotions in trading lead to poor decisions.

A swing trading style, by contrast, may have a few transactions some days and nothing on others. Positions can be checked periodically or handled with alerts when critical price points are reached rather than the need for constant monitoring. This allows swing traders to diversify their investments and keep a level head while investing.

Six Essential Skills of Master Traders

Just about anyone can become a trader, but to be one of the master traders takes more than investment capitalInvesting: A Beginner's GuideCFI's Investing for Beginners guide will teach you the basics of investing and how to get started. Learn about different strategies and techniques for trading and a three-piece suit. Keep in mind: there is a sea of individuals looking to join the ranks of master traders and bring home the kind of money that goes with that title. Very few of them make the grade or even come close to it. Consistent, winning traders are about as rare as multi-million dollar winning lottery tickets.

One of the prep courses of becoming a master trader is an adequate education in fundamental economics, financial marketsTypes of Markets - Dealers, Brokers, ExchangesMarkets include brokers, dealers, and exchange markets. Each market operates under different trading mechanisms, which affect liquidity and control. The different types of markets allow for different trading characteristics, outlined in this guide, and technical analysisTechnical Analysis - A Beginner's GuideTechnical analysis is a form of investment valuation that analyses past prices to predict future price action. Technical analysts believe that the collective actions of all the participants in the market accurately reflect all relevant information, and therefore, continually assign a fair market value to securities.. But there are plenty of well-educated, well-informed, very intelligent individuals who won’t qualify as master traders. The critical difference between winning traders and losing traders is more dependent on acquiring the six essential skills that master traders share. Master these skills and then you’ll get a genuine shot at being a trading master.

Skills #1 and #2 – Research and Analysis

The ability to do quality research and solid market analysis is fundamental to trading success. Master traders develop their skills in being able to thoroughly research all information relevant to the securities they trade – and then, more importantly, being able to accurately determine the likely impact of that information on a particular market.

Master traders learn and perfect by utilizing market information – both fundamental economic information and market information in the form of trading and price action that occurs – to adapt and approach the market in the most effective ways possible. (By “effective,” we mean with favorable risk/reward ratios, high probabilities of success, and low levels of risk, just in case we get things wrong).

Analytical skills are vital because they enable a trader to better understand, identify, and use trends (or the lack thereof) – both as applied to price action on individual charts of various time frames, and in the market as a whole.

As you analyze a market and spot patterns and trends, it’s also necessary to determine what technical trading approaches are called for. We suggest that focusing less on the money to be made, and more on taking the right action at the right time, is a major attitude necessary for developing and perfecting your analytical skills. Focusing on the market, not on the money in your trading account, enables you to make the best, objective trading decisions in each situation – and doing THAT enables you to ultimately make the wisest and most profitable trades. Nearly all of the “Market Wizards” interviewed by Jack Schwager in his famous books on winning trading stated that they focus on the market and on their trades, not on their account balance. They’re solely concerned with trying to get the market right, regardless of whether doing so makes them a dollar or a million dollars.

Skill #3 – Adapting Your Market Analysis to Changing Market Conditions

Over time, master traders develop strategies and trading techniques that they use over and over again. Over time, every trader puts together his own personal toolkit of methods, maneuvers, strategies, and trading tactics. That’s a good thing. It’s important that you have your own individual trading style and trading edge, such as specific combinations of technical indicators that signal high probability trades.

Having your own tried and true trading tricks is a good thing. A better thing, a master trader sort of thing, is having your most ingrained habit be the habit of continually monitoring the market for signs and indications that the market is changing or forming a new pattern, thereby signaling to you that you need to adapt to those changing conditions by adjusting your trading strategy accordingly.

Skill #4 – Staying in the Game

Regardless of the industry, company, or particular profession, everyone faces peaks and valleys in their career. If you are a full-time trader, you will inevitably be met with considerable gains and, at other times, significant losses. Sticking with it – staying in the trading game – is an irreplaceable and vital skill that every master trader possesses.

Of course, it’s easy to become excited and overly eager to make hasty trades when favorable price movements benefit your bank account. Human nature bids us to continue acting in certain ways when the outcomes are good. But there will also be days when the market all but completely turns against you. Rather than being filled with excitement about trading, at times like those you just want to turn off your computer monitor or close out your trading platform and slink away and lick your financial wounds.

A master trader understands that neither extreme will last forever, and, that sticking it out – through the good and the bad – is a skill that enables you to learn, grow, and profit.

A significant part of being able to stay in the game is practicing good risk management and money management. Always use stop-loss orders and never risk too much on any one trade. Don’t take trades unless they have positive risk/reward ratios, in other words, if what you’ll make if you’re right is significantly more than what you’ll lose if you’re wrong. Why risk a possible $500 loss if the most you’ll likely make even if your market analysis is perfectly correct is only $100? Those numbers are not in your favor. Instead, only take trades when being right stands to make you a lot more than being wrong can cost you. Even when there seems to be a good trade opportunity, such as a major market reversal, if you can’t get a favorable low-risk entry point, just let that opportunity go by, and instead wait for one to materialize where you can get a good, low-risk entry.

Skills #5 and #6 – Discipline and Patience

Discipline and patience are two very closely related skills that every master trader needs – in abundance. As we mentioned above, staying in the game is important because it allows you to experience both the highs and the lows, learning from them and making the necessary adjustments to your trading. A master trader must be both patient and disciplined in order to stick with it, especially on days when profit is non-existent.

A patient and disciplined trader knows, for example, that quite often the very worst trading sessions or days are followed by significantly better ones. Keep in mind that a fundamental part of market behavior is its up-and-down, give-and-take fluctuations. Sessions that run flat and see very little volume may continue for several days, but the disciplined trader understands that patience will be rewarded, so he waits until the market begins to make a truly significant move before entering and risking his hard-earned money.

One of the most common mistakes of losing traders is trading when the market isn’t presenting any genuine profit opportunities. Many traders just put on a trade out of sheer boredom. Such actions nearly always cost you money.

A master trader simply takes it in stride if an entire trading session passes by in which no good, low-risk profit opportunities arise. Master traders know that the market will be open again tomorrow and that there will always be new trading opportunities.

Don’t let markets that are going basically nowhere trick you into abandoning good trading discipline and strategy. Be patient, wait, and when an opportunity does present itself, don’t hesitate – pull the trigger and enter the market, with confidence in your trading ability.

Bonus Skill #7 – Record Keeping

Master traders learn from their trading mistakes. Losing traders rarely do. One of the critical habits that creates winning traders is that of keeping a trading journal. Your trading journal keeps a record of each trade as it happens: your entry point and your reason for buying or selling; where you put your stop-loss order and your take-profit order; what happened in the market after you initiated your trade and how you reacted to the market action; finally, the amount of your win/loss.

Keeping a trading journal and regularly reading back through it provides one of the quickest and easiest ways to identify both what you’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong.

In the End

The primary message we hope you take away from this piece is that every master trader needs to develop the essential skills for successful (i.e., profitable) trading. Make the necessary effort to become a genuinely skilled trader, and the market will reward you for your diligent efforts.

Becoming a master trader isn’t easy, but it is possible and well worth the effort. If you start working in that direction today, rather than putting it off until tomorrow, then you’re one day closer to making your financial dreams a reality.

In this paper we explore the specific role of randomness in financial markets, inspired by the beneficial role of noise in many physical systems and in previous applications to complex socio-economic systems. After a short introduction, we study the performance of some of the most used trading strategies in predicting the dynamics of financial markets for different international stock exchange indexes, with the goal of comparing them to the performance of a completely random strategy. In this respect, historical data for FTSE-UK, FTSE-MIB, DAX, and S & P500 indexes are taken into account for a period of about 15–20 years (since their creation until today).

Introduction

In physics, both at the classical and quantum level, many real systems work fine and more efficiently due to the useful role of a random weak noise [1]–[6]. But not only physical systems benefits from disorder. In fact, noise has a great influences on the dynamics of cells, neurons and other biological entities, but also on ecological, geophysical and socio-economic systems. Following this line of research, we have recently investigated how random strategies can help to improve the efficiency of a hierarchical group in order to face the Peter principle[7]–[9] or a public institution such as a Parliament [10]. Other groups have successfully explored similar strategies in minority and Parrondo games [11], [12], in portfolio performance evaluation [13] and in the context of the continuous double auction [14].

Recently Taleb has brilliantly discussed in his successful books [15], [16] how chance and black swans rule our life, but also economy and financial market behavior beyond our personal and rational expectations or control. Actually, randomness enters in our everyday life although we hardly recognize it. Therefore, even without being skeptic as much as Taleb, one could easily claim that we often misunderstand phenomena around us and are fooled by apparent connections which are only due to fortuity. Economic systems are unavoidably affected by expectations, both present and past, since agents’ beliefs strongly influence their future dynamics. If today a very good expectation emerged about the performance of any security, everyone would try to buy it and this occurrence would imply an increase in its price. Then, tomorrow, this security would be priced higher than today, and this fact would just be the consequence of the market expectation itself. This deep dependence on expectations made financial economists try to build mechanisms to predict future assets prices. The aim of this study is precisely to check whether these mechanisms, which will be described in detail in the next sections, are more effective in predicting the market dynamics compared to a completely random strategy.

In a previous article [17], motivated also by some intriguing experiments where a child, a chimpanzee and darts were successfully used for remunerative investments [18], [19], we already found some evidence in favor of random strategies for the FTSE-UK stock market. Here we will extend this investigation to other financial markets and for new trading strategies. The paper is organized as follows. Section 2 presents a brief introduction to the debate about predictability in financial markets. In Section 3 we introduce the financial time series considered in our study and perform a detrended analysis in search for possible correlations of some kind. In Section 4 we define the trading strategies used in our simulations while, in Section5, we discuss the main results obtained. Finally, in Section6, we draw our conclusions, suggesting also some counterintuitive policy implications.

Expectations and Predictability in Financial Markets

As Simon [20] pointed out, individuals assume their decision on the basis of a limited knowledge about their environment and thus face high search costs to obtain needed information. However, normally, they cannot gather all information they should. Therefore, agents act on the basis of bounded rationality, which leads to significant biases in the expected utility maximization that they pursue. In contrast, Friedman [21] defended the rational agent approach, which considers that the behavior of agents can be best described assuming their rationality, since non-rational agents do not survive competition on the market and are driven out of it. Therefore, neither systematic biases in expected utility, nor bounded rationality can be used to describe agents’ behaviors and their expectations.

Without any fear of contradiction, one could say that nowadays two main reference models of expectations have been widely established within the economics literature: the adaptive expectations model and the rational expectation model. Here we will not give any formal definition of these paradigms. For our purposes, it is sufficient to recall their rationale. The adaptive expectations model is founded on a somehow weighted series of backward-looking values (so that the expected value of a variable is the result of the combination of its past values). In contrast, the rational expectations model hypothesizes that all agents have access to all the available information and, therefore, know exactly the model that describes the economic system (the expected value of a variable is then the objective prediction provided by theory). These two theories dates back to very relevant contributions, among which we just refer to Friedman [21], [22], Phelps [23], and Cagan [24] for adaptive expectations (it is however worth to notice that the notion of “adaptive expectations” has been first introduced by Arrow and Nerlove [25]). For rational expectations we refer to Muth [26], Lucas [27], and Sargent-Wallace [28].

Financial markets are often taken as example for complex dynamics and dangerous volatility. This somehow suggests the idea of unpredictability. Nonetheless, due to the relevant role of those markets in the economic system, a wide body of literature has been developed to obtain some reliable predictions. As a matter of fact, forecasting is the key point of financial markets. Since Fama [29], we say a market is efficient if perfect arbitrage occurs. This means that the case of inefficiency implies the existence of opportunities for unexploited profits and, of course, traders would immediately operate long or short positions until any further possibility of profit disappears. Jensen [30] states precisely that a market is to be considered efficient with respect to an information set if it is impossible to make profits by trading on the basis of that given information set. This is consistent with Malkiel [31], who argues that an efficient market perfectly reflects all information in determining assets’ prices. As the reader can easily understand, the more important part of this definition of efficiency relies on the completeness of the information set. In fact, Fama [29] distinguishes three forms of market efficiency, according to the degree of completeness of the informative set (namely “weak”, “semi-strong”, and “strong”). Thus, traders and financial analysts continuously seek to expand their information set to gain the opportunity to choose the best strategy: this process involves agents so much in price fluctuations that, at the end of the day, one could say that their activity is reduced to a systematic guess. The complete globalization of financial markets amplified this process and, eventually, we are experiencing decades of extreme variability and high volatility.

Keynes argued, many years ago, that rationality of agents and mass psychology (so-called “animal spirits”) should not be interpreted as if they were the same thing. The Author introduced the very famous beauty contest example to explain the logic underneath financial markets. In his General Theory [32] he wrote that “investment based on genuine long-term expectations is so difficult as to be scarcely practicable. He who attempts it must surely lead much more laborious days and run greater risks than he who tries to guess better than the crowd how the crowd will behave; and, given equal intelligence, he may make more disastrous mistakes.” In other words, in order to predict the winner of the beauty contest, one should try to interpret the jury’s preferred beauty, rather than pay attention on the ideal of objective beauty. In financial markets it is exactly the same thing. It seems impossible to forecast prices of shares without mistakes. The reason is that no investor can know in advance the opinion “of the jury”, i.e. of a widespread, heterogeneous and very substantial mass of investors that reduces any possible prediction to just a guess.

Despite considerations like these, the so-called Efficient Market Hypothesis (whose main theoretical background is the theory of rational expectations), describes the case of perfectly competitive markets and perfectly rational agents, endowed with all available information, who choose for the best strategies (since otherwise the competitive clearing mechanism would put them out of the market). There is evidence that this interpretation of a fully working perfect arbitrage mechanism is not adequate to analyze financial markets as, for example: Cutler et al. [33], who shows that large price movements occur even when little or no new information is available; Engle [34] who reported that price volatility is strongly temporally correlated; Mandelbrot [35], [36], Lux [37], Mantegna and Stanley [38] who argue that short-time fluctuations of prices are non-normal; or last but not least, Campbell and Shiller [39] who explain that prices may not accurately reflect rational valuations.

Very interestingly, a plethora of heterogeneous agents models have been introduced in the field of financial literature. In these models, different groups of traders co-exist, with different expectations, influencing each other by means of the consequences of their behaviors. Once again, our discussion cannot be exhaustive here, but we can fruitfully mention at least contributions by Brock [40], [41], Brock and Hommes [42], Chiarella [43], Chiarella and He [44], DeGrauwe et al. [45], Frankel and Froot [46], Lux [47], Wang [48], and Zeeman [49].

Part of this literature refers to the approach, called “adaptive belief systems”, that tries to apply non-linearity and noise to financial market models. Intrinsic uncertainty about economic fundamentals, along with errors and heterogeneity, leads to the idea that, apart from the fundamental value (i.e. the present discounted value of the expected flows of dividends), share prices fluctuate unpredictably because of phases of either optimism or pessimism according to corresponding phases of uptrend and downtrend that cause market crises. How could this sort of erratic behavior be managed in order to optimize an investment strategy? In order to explain the very different attitude adopted by agents to choose strategies when trading on financial markets, a distinction is done between fundamentalists and chartists. The former ones base their expectations about future assets’ prices upon market fundamentals and economic factors (i.e. both micro- and macroeconomic variables, such as dividends, earnings, economic growth, unemployment rates, etc). Conversely, the latter ones try to extrapolate trends or statistically relevant characteristics from past series of data, in order to predict future paths of assets prices (also known as technical analysis).

Given that the interaction of these two groups of agents determines the evolution of the market, we choose here to focus on chartists’ behavior (since a qualitative analysis on macroeconomic fundamentals is absolutely subjective and difficult to asses), trying to evaluate the individual investor’s ex-ante predictive capacity. Assuming the lack of complete information, randomness plays a key role, since efficiency is impossible to be reached. This is particularly important in order to underline that our approach does not rely on any form of the above mentioned Efficient Markets Hypothesis paradigm. More precisely, we are seeking for the answer to the following question: if a trader assumes the lack of complete information through all the market (i.e. the unpredictability of stock prices dynamics [50]–[53]), would an ex-ante random trading strategy perform, on average, as good as well-known trading strategies? We move from the evidence that, since each agent relies on a different information set in order to build his/her trading strategies, no efficient mechanism can be invoked. Instead, a complex network of self-influencing behavior, due to asymmetric circulation of information, develops its links and generates herd behaviors to follow some signals whose credibility is accepted.

Financial crises show that financial markets are not immune to failures. Their periodic success is not free of charge: catastrophic events burn enormous values in dollars and the economic systems in severe danger. Are traders so sure that elaborated strategies fit the dynamics of the markets? Our simple simulation will perform a comparative analysis of the performance of different trading strategies: our traders will have to predict, day by day, if the market will go up (‘bullish’ trend) or down (‘bearish’ trend). Tested strategies are: the Momentum, the RSI, the UPD, the MACD, and a completely Random one.

Rational expectations theorists would immediately bet that the random strategy would loose the competition as it is not making use of any information but, as we will show, our results are quite surprising.

Detrended Analysis of the Index Time Series

We consider four very popular indexes of financial markets and in particular, we analyze the following corresponding time series, shown in Fig. 1:

In general, the possibility to predict financial time series has been stimulated by the finding of some kind of persistent behavior in some of them [38], [54], [55]. The main purpose of the present section is to investigate the possible presence of correlations in the previous four financial series of European and US stock market all share indexes. In this connection, we will calculate the time-dependent Hurst exponent by using the detrended moving average (DMA) technique [56]. Let us begin with a summary of the DMA algorithm. The computational procedure is based on the calculation of the standard deviation
along a given time series defined as
(1)where
is the average calculated in each time window of size
. In order to determine the Hurst exponent
, the function
is calculated for increasing values of
inside the interval
,
being the length of the time series, and the obtained values are reported as a function of
on a log-log plot. In general,
exhibits a power-law dependence with exponent
, i.e.

(2)In particular, if
, one has a negative correlation or anti-persistent behavior, while if
one has a positive correlation or persistent behavior. The case of
corresponds to an uncorrelated Brownian process. In our case, as a first step, we calculated the Hurst exponent considering the complete series. This analysis is illustrated in the four plots of Fig. 2. Here, a linear fit to the log-log plots reveals that all the values of the Hurst index H obtained in this way for the time series studied are, on average, very close to 0.5. This result seems to indicate an absence of correlations on large time scales and a consistence with a random process.

Figure 2. Detrended analysis for the four financial market series shown in Fig. 1.

The power law behavior of the DMA standard deviation allows to derive an Hurst index that, in all the four cases, oscillates around 0.5, thus indicating an absence of correlations, on average, over large time periods. See text.

https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0068344.g002

On the other hand, it is interesting to calculate the Hurst exponent locally in time. In order to perform this analysis, we consider subsets of the complete series by means of sliding windows
of size
, which move along the series with time step
. This means that, at each time
, we calculate the
inside the sliding window
by changing
with
in Eq.(1). Hence, following the same procedure described above, a sequence of Hurst exponent values
is obtained as function of time. In Fig. 3 we show the results obtained for the parameters
,
. In this case, the values obtained for the Hurst exponent
differ very much locally from 0.5, thus indicating the presence of significant local correlations.

This investigation, which is in line with what was found previously in Ref. [56] for the Dax index, seems to suggest that correlations are important only on a local temporal scale, while they cancel out averaging over long-term periods. As we will see in the next sections, this feature will affect the performances of the trading strategies considered.

Trading Strategies Description

In the present study we consider five trading strategies defined as follows:

Random (RND) Strategy

This strategy is the simplest one, since the correspondent trader makes his/her prediction at time
completely at random (with uniform distribution).

Momentum (MOM) Strategy

This strategy is based on the so called ‘momentum’
indicator, i.e. the difference between the value
and the value
, where
is a given trading interval (in days). Then, if
, the trader predicts an increment of the closing index for the next day (i.e. it predicts that
) and vice-versa. In the following simulations we will consider
days, since this is one of the most used time lag for the momentum indicator. See Ref. [57].

Relative Strength Index (RSI) Strategy

This strategy is based on a more complex indicator called ‘RSI’. It is considered a measure of the stock’s recent trading strength and its definition is:
, where
is the ratio between the sum of the positive returns and the sum of the negative returns occurred during the last
days before
. Once calculated the RSI index for all the days included in a given time-window of length
immediately preceding the time
, the trader which follows the RSI strategy makes his/her prediction on the basis of a possible reversal of the market trend, revealed by the so called ‘divergence’ between the original time series and the new RSI one. A divergence can be defined referring to a comparison between the original data series and the generated RSI-series, and it is the most significant trading signal delivered by any oscillator-style indicator. It is the case when the significant trend between two local extrema shown by the RSI trend is oriented in the opposite direction to the significant trend between two extrema (in the same time lag) shown by the original series. When the RSI line slopes differently from the original series line, a divergence occurs. Look at the example in Fig. 4: two local maxima follow two different trends sloped oppositely. In the case shown, the analyst will interpret this divergence as a bullish expectation (since the RSI oscillator diverges from the original series: it starts increasing when the original series is still decreasing). In our simplified model, the presence of such a divergence translates into a change in the prediction of the
sign, depending on the bullish or bearish trend of the previous
days. In the following simulations we will choose
days, since - again - this value is one of the mostly used in RSI-based actual trading strategies. See Ref. [57].

Up and Down Persistency (UPD) Strategy

This deterministic strategy does not come from technical analysis. However, we decided to consider it because it seems to follows the apparently simple alternate “up and down” behavior of market series that any observer can see at first sight. The strategy is based on the following very simple rule: the prediction for tomorrow market’s behavior is just the opposite of what happened the day before. If, e.g., one has
, the expectation at time
for the period
will be bullish:
, and vice versa.

Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) Strategy

The ‘MACD’ is a series built by means of the difference between two Exponential Moving Averages (EMA, henceforth) of the market price, referred to two different time windows, one smaller and one larger. In any moment t,
. In particular, the first is the Exponential Moving Average of
taken over twelve days, whereas the second refers to twenty-six days. The calculation of these EMAs on a pre-determined time lag, x, given a proportionality weight
, is executed by the following recursive formula:
with
, where
. Once the MACD series has been calculated, its 9-days Exponential Moving Average is obtained and, finally, the trading strategy for the market dynamics prediction can be defined: the expectation for the market is bullish (bearish) if

A divergence is a disagreement between the indicator (RSI) and the underlying price. By means of trend-lines, the analyst check that slopes of both series agree. When the divergence occurs, an inversion of the price dynamic is expected. In the example a bullish period is expected.

Results of Empirically Based Simulations

For each one of our four financial time series of length
(in days), the goal was simply to predict, day by day and for each strategy, the upward (bullish) or downward (bearish) movement of the index
at a given day with respect to the closing value
one day before: if the prediction is correct, the trader wins, otherwise he/she looses. In this connection we are only interested in evaluating the percentage of wins achieved by each strategy, assuming that - at every time step - the traders perfectly know the past history of the indexes but do not possess any other information and can neither exert any influence on the market, nor receive any information about future moves.

Conclusions and Policy Implications

In this paper we have explored the role of random strategies in financial systems from a micro-economic point of view. In particular, we simulated the performance of five trading strategies, including a completely random one, applied to four very popular financial markets indexes, in order to compare their predictive capacity. Our main result, which is independent of the market considered, is that standard trading strategies and their algorithms, based on the past history of the time series, although have occasionally the chance to be successful inside small temporal windows, on a large temporal scale perform on average not better than the purely random strategy, which, on the other hand, is also much less volatile. In this respect, for the individual trader, a purely random strategy represents a costless alternative to expensive professional financial consulting, being at the same time also much less risky, if compared to the other trading strategies.

This result, obtained at a micro-level, could have many implications for real markets also at the macro-level, where other important phenomena, like herding, asymmetric information, rational bubbles occur. In fact, one might expect that a widespread adoption of a random approach for financial transactions would result in a more stable market with lower volatility. In this connection, random strategies could play the role of reducing herding behavior over the whole market since, if agents knew that financial transactions do not necessarily carry an information role, bandwagon effects could probably fade. On the other hand, as recently suggested by one of us [59], if the policy-maker (Central Banks) intervened by randomly buying and selling financial assets, two results could be simultaneously obtained. From an individual point of view, agents would suffer less for asymmetric or insider information, due to the consciousness of a “fog of uncertainty” created by the random investments. From a systemic point of view, again the herding behavior would be consequently reduced and eventual bubbles would burst when they are still small and are less dangerous; thus, the entire financial system would be less prone to the speculative behavior of credible “guru” traders, as explained also in [60]. Of course, this has to be explored in detail as well as the feedback effect of a global reaction of the market to the application of these actions. This topic is however beyond the goal of the present paper and it will be investigated in a future work.

Facebook and Bing jointly announced an agreement that would allow Microsoft’s search engine to return results based on the Facebook “Likes” of the searcher’s friends. Additionally, Google recently began including Twitter updates in search results. It’s a natural innovation that fits into the business models of both companies and takes the trend of individualized search results to the next logical level: results tailored to the searcher’s existing social footprint.
SEO insiders have wondered whether this new search innovation would affect placement strategies, and the simple answer is yes. Yes, there will be changes to the way SEO professionals run their clients’ campaigns. Yes, this will affect the industry as a whole. And yes, we believe SEO professionals will have to adapt to meet ever-evolving needs.

Changing the Method, Not the Mission
To think that this development is rocking the SEO world however is to misunderstand the realities of the industry. In roughly 15 years of existence, SEO has grown from being a small wildcat operation run by webmasters and content services to being one of the most dynamic, fast-growing sectors of the tech market. The reason for this rapid growth is because — not in spite –- of the constantly evolving nature of search engines.

While the Bing-Facebook agreement and the recent updates to Google will change elements of how we do our business, the fundamentals will remain the same. As much as innovation shapes the day-to-day processes of optimization, the core foundations of the industry remain unchanged. The goal still is placing clients at the top of results pages, whether this is through organic search, paid search or social media.
Social media is nothing new in the world of online marketing. Facebook alone has 500 million users and Twitter feeds are already making their way into search results. Before long, results may integrate other social networking sites that don’t even exist yet. What the Bing-Facebook agreement is indicative of is the many changes that have taken SEO from a small-time game to a major, innovative industry. SEO is not about counter-punching, and it’s not about simply reacting to the changing search-engine landscape. Instead, it is about growing and evolving alongside search engines.

How Twitter Can Help B2C Companies
Most people think social media marketing just means Facebook marketing. As the 800 pound gorilla of the social networking space, it’s understandable that so many companies have turned Facebook into the hub of their social media marketing campaign. Both B2C and B2B companies have found great success with Facebook, seeing an increase in brand recognition, consumer engagement and more. But Facebook isn’t the only social player on the block that B2C companies would be wise to invest their time in. Twitter helps you connect with your audience in a whole new way and add another level to any social media marketing campaign.

Research indicates that Twitter is a favorite social networking platform among early adopters and influencers. It’s no secret that a small percentage of Twitter users are the authors behind a vast majority of the Tweets. But these are the kinds of consumers a B2C company should want to connect with, as they are more likely to become brand loyal.

Here are some practice ways a B2C company can utilize Twitter:

1. Get more connected with your customers
Recent research has shown that Twitter is the preferred social network among consumers for learning about new product updates. The constant, real time stream of information that fuels Twitter makes it the perfect place to share information about things like software updates and product launches. Most consumers look to a company’s Facebook page as a way to learn about discounts and sign up for promotions. Twitter, on the other hand, is often viewed as a direct line of communication with the company, making it the perfect platform for staying connected with favorite B2C brands.

2. Twitter is mobile
As the amount of smart phones in the market grows, mobile marketing becomes an increasingly important component of any marketing strategy. Twitter may be one of the more simple social networks (it doesn’t get much more basic than a 140 character cap), but that is exactly why it is so mobile friendly. Whether someone is looking at Twitter on a computer or on their phone, the format is very similar—a scrolling list of Tweets. B2C companies don’t have to develop a mobile version of their Twitter account to make sure it is easily accessible/readable by mobile devices. Read more at SearchTerms.com...
That day came this week, as Google announced it had expanded the "search quality" algorithm worldwide for English language users.
Many sites were reported to have lost major traffic and search rankings as a result of the U.S. roll-out. We've expected these sites to be further devastated as Panda made its way to more countries.

Believe it or not, not everyone's quick to comment on how their traffic has been impacted. EzineArticles was one of the sites that was hit hard, and quickly began making changes to its content approach following the U.S. update. They talked about this on the company blog. No new blog post yet.

The last time I reached out to CEO Chris Knight for comment on the site's traffic post-Panda, he didn't want to offer any - although he did provide another update on the blog in March.

Mahalo CEO Jason Calacanis, who had to resort to layoffs because of the Panda update did comment on the situation. "We were impacted starting on February 24th and haven't seen a significant change up or down since then," he tells us. "We support Google's effort to make better search results and continue to build only expert-driven content. This means any videos and text we make has a credentialed expert with seven years or 10,000 hours of experience (a la Malcolm Gladwell)."

He pointed to the following examples:

http://www.mahalo.com/learn-to-play-guitar-beginner-course/
http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-make-profiteroles/

"Everything we're doing is now expert driven. Period," Calacanis says. "Google's Panda update has ended the age of casual, non-expert-driven content. We're hopeful that as Google continues to tweak their algorithm our experts and their content will be rewarded."

Morris Rosenthal of Foner Books (a Panda victim whose story we looked at here and here) tells us, "As far as the algo goes, I think my initial take was 100% on. It's just brand names and social sites now. I'm even seeing Google Answers ranking for many queries, despite the fact they shut Answers down in 2002! But it was 'social.'"

Last week, we looked at a report from marketing firm iCrossing, which seemed to indicate benefits for big brands as well.

We've reached out to Suite101, and Demand Media for comment on the update, and have nothing so far.

Google's Amit Singhal told webmasters, "Based on our testing, we've found the algorithm is very accurate at detecting site quality. If you believe your site is high-quality and has been impacted by this change, we encourage you to evaluate the different aspects of your site extensively. Google's quality guidelines provide helpful information about how to improve your site. As sites change, our algorithmic rankings will update to reflect that. In addition, you're welcome to post in our Webmaster Help Forums. While we aren't making any manual exceptions, we will consider this feedback as we continue to refine our algorithms."

Following the initial launch of the Panda update, we looked at some things that are known and some things that are possible, with regards to what publishers and webmasters should take into account. Given Google's specific reference to their quality guidelines in the latest announcement, this seems like the best place to start. Here's Google's list of "specific guidelines":
Creator Eric Bort recently spoke with us to describe how he’s optimized Surgery Squad’s AdSense performance and revenue by simply adding a third ad unit to his pages.

Inside AdSense: Can you tell us a little about how Surgery Squad got started?
As part of these programs, I’d created some virtual surgeries which were well-received, so I decided to make a website devoted to this topic. People have lots of questions about surgeries. They want to know, “What happens to my body while I’m asleep on the operating table?” It’s a very intriguing topic from a human perspective.

IA: What role does AdSense play in your business?
EB: We’ve used AdSense on Surgery Squad since its launch, because we’ve previously seen a lot of success with AdSense on some of our other sites. AdSense is currently responsible for all of Surgery Squad’s revenue. It was really quick to set up – once our account was approved, we were up and running within 10 minutes. And with the breadth of advertisers in the network, I know that AdSense will always have high quality ads to display.

IA: Why did you decide to add another ad unit to your pages?
EB: I received an optimization tip from the AdSense team suggesting I maximize revenue by adding an additional ad unit to my pages. Initially, I was wary of overwhelming visitors with ads, because it’s very important to me to create a good user experience. But I decided to give it a try because I know how important it is to test new strategies and see what works best. So, I added a third ad unit to all my pages, toward the bottom of each page.

IA: What were the results? Would you recommend this strategy to other publishers?
EB: I was surprised to see the new ad unit performing just as well, if not better, than the other two ad units. I think it’s due to visitors who scroll down to the bottom of the page to add comments, and then find ads they want in addition to our content. Our clickthrough rate has increased substantially. It’s amazing. Our eCPM has also increased 168 percent and our overall revenue earnings have grown by more than 200 percent. With this additional revenue from AdSense, we’re able to cover our costs and sustain our business. To know these costs are covered is hugely important when you’re running a small business.

I’d recommend that other publishers consider optimizing revenue by adding new ad units. If presented in the right way, ads can enhance the user experience. But it’s really important to test and see what works best with your content, format, and user behavior. Have the patience to wait and see what works and what doesn’t.
If you're running a business that depends on local traffic, you
probably know that good reviews can bring more customers through
the door.

But did you know that getting reviews - and not necessarily just
good ones - can help your business rank better in search results?

It's true. Getting customers to review your company on your
Google
Places listing, in Yahoo! Local, Bing, CitySearch, Yelp
and other review sites helps you in a couple of ways:

- Ninety percent of consumers consult the Web before they head out
of the house to make a local purchase. Yes, you read that right -
90 percent, according to digital marketing analysis firm eMarketer
Inc. If your business has plenty of reviews for people to
read - and most are enthusiastic, or at least positive - you're
likely to get some new customers. That's because 70 percent of
people believe in the validity of reviews written by strangers,
according to The Nielsen Co.

- Having reviews of your business in several places - including
your website - can improve your search engine optimization
(SEO)
and help you rank higher in search results. That's because
search engines now look at reviews as an indication that a
business matters. And if you've got plenty of reviews, you may be
able to occupy more than one place on a page of search results.

Take a look at how much "real estate" Voodoo Doughnuts takes up on this search engine
results page, called a SERP in SEO-speak. The company has hit gold
with the top three spots. Voodoo also has the top spot in local
results - the list headed "Places for donuts near Portland, OR" -
and yet another spot lower down in local results.

Note that Voodoo Doughnuts' place page shows 3,015 reviews. That's a
lot of reviews, and they're clearly helping this already-popular shop
get noticed by anyone searching for donuts in Portland, Oregon.

I'm Not a Doughnut Rockstar. How Do I Get Reviews?

The good news is, it's not that hard to get more of your customers
to review you. Adopting just a few practices recommended by
local-search guru Mike Blumenthal can
help your company's website, Google Places page and other
listings appear higher in searches - and win you more business.

A quick summary of how to get more reviews:

1) Get your company listed everywhere on the Web it makes
sense for your business.

2) Ask for reviews - see suggestions below.

3) Deliver great customer service so people will want to
review you, and so the reviews will be mostly good.

First, Stake Your Claim

There have always been directories and listing sites on the Web,
though the ones most in favor with searchers tend to change over
time.

Some good places to get listed:

GetListed.org offers free
help for getting your business listed at top sites on the Web,
including Google Places,
Yahoo Local,
InsiderPages.com and others.
GetListed tells you which listing sites are free,
which cost money, and advises you which paid sites might make
sense for your business. The site also offers a tool called Local
Dashboard that helps you track your online listings.

Yelp.com - Yelp is famous for
its reviews of restaurants and other retail and service businesses.
Local search expert David Mimh, who runs GetListed.org,
says the site is essential for any bar or restaurant to list on Yelp.

CitySearch.com - It's not
as popular as it was a few years ago, but CitySearch is still
where many people go to choose a restaurant or other local business.

Use any site where you know your customers are. Mike
Blumenthal suggests choosing the sites that your customers favor.
How would you know that? Well, you could Google your direct
competitors to see where they've been reviewed, and make sure you
have listings on those sites. If you own a pet supply business,
and you know of sites where pet owners exchange news and tips -
and you can list your business there - do it.

AboutUs.org has a page
about virtually every site on the Web. Each website profile has
editable fields where you can add your contact information, a
short summary about your site and your logo. There's also a
wiki section where you can write as much as you like about
your site and your business, and include links back to your
site on keywords that matter for your business. Under the

AboutUs DoFollow policy,
those links can become follow links, and add some SEO
value for your site.

How To Get Reviews: Make it Easy

Mike Blumenthal says you must make it very easy for people to
review your business. One great strategy is to create a special
page for reviews on your website - for example,
'''http://www.MyLocalBusiness.com/reviews''' - so people can leave
their comments easily on your site. You can put the URL for that
page on your business card, and hand it out to everybody. You could
even print up a special thank you card with the reviews page
printed on it, and slip it in with your customers' purchases when
you bag them.

Mike also suggests creating a QR code for your reviews page, and
having it printed up fairly large, to display in your storefront
window. A customer can then scan the QR code with her phone, and
maybe even write a review of your business right then and there.
Or have the QR code link to your Google Places profile.

Once you've listed your business at the sites mentioned in the
section above, you can also print the URLs for those listings on
a card, or use QR codes, to make it easy for people to get to your
review sites. One caution: You can't directly ask people to review
you on Yelp - that can get you banned from the site. Nonetheless,
lots of people know and use Yelp, so it's still a good idea to be
listed there.

How To Get Good Reviews

It may sound simple, but the best way to get reviews is to deliver
a good experience. Treat customers with courtesy and respect, provide
a good product or professional-level service, and most of your
reviews will be good.

Another easy way: Ask for reviews. When someone tells you how
pleased they are with your company, ask them if they'd be willing
to put it in writing. Guide them to the location where you'd most
like the review to appear. Making it easy for them makes it more
likely they'll do it.

Anticipate that things will sometimes go wrong, and give people
a way to let you know what's gone wrong, so you can put it right
immediately. Display your phone number prominently on every page
of your website, so people can call you. If the phone isn't the
best option, or you want to give more options, put a big "Contact
Us" button on every page, and provide full contact options on the
page it links to. It goes without saying that when people contact
you with a problem, you must help them quickly and graciously.

Providing quick and easy ways to contact you engenders trust in
people who come to your website. If you're willing to be contacted
that easily, you must be trustworthy - the exact opposite of those
shady sites that provide no contact information at all.

Another big benefit: Helping a dissatisfied or perplexed customer
can earn you an enthusiastic fan who's more than willing to give
you a good review. And that review is one more building block for
growing your online presence.
iCrossing does online marketing for numerous big brands, and says it has noticed some trends in which some of these brands have either risen in rankings or remained flat since the Google's Panda Update, for keywords where other sites dropped off the grid.

Do you think Google got it right with Panda? Tell us what you think.

iCrossing counts plenty of big brands among their clients. Among them are: AAA, Auto Trader, BMW, Chevron, Coca-Cola, EA Games, eBay, FedEx, Hyundai, Kia, Marie Claire, Mary Kay, MasterCard, Mazda, Nokia, Porsche, LEGO, and Toyota, to name a few.

Collin Cornwell, VP of natural search at iCrossing, has shared some data looking at a couple examples of big brands that have followed the trend. He would not get into names, but calls them a "premier travel and hospitality client," and a "big-time banker."

It's worth noting that these companies also saw no changes in Bing or Yahoo, and tha we don't know what the content for the pages in question actually looks like - a key piece of the puzzle, obviously.

Here's some data from the travel site:

According to iCrossing, Page 1 ranking increased 18% from the big brand from the beginning of the year, and 6.3% from when Panda was released, while brands like Suite101 and CheaperThanHotels.com saw 96% and 95% drops for the same keywords.

And some from the Bank:

The bank saw an increase of 45% for all non-branded keywords from the beginning of the year, and 10% increase in Page 1 placements since Panda. Smaller brands saw 94% - 84% drops.

"Google has been favoring big brands for years – starting with its 'Vince Update' back in 2009 and then again in 2010 when Google decided to include BRANDS in related searches," said Cornwell.

"While the Panda update wasn't meant to affect large brands directly, the change(s) seem to have had an indirect impact as the 'lower quality' sites continue to slip down in the search engine results pages," he added.

By nature, big brands tend to get more links, more sharing, and more engagement. They also generally have more resources to apply to marketing tactics, web development, and design - all of which can play directly into how their content is viewed in Google.

The question is whether or not this approach works. Is content quality synonymous with brand recognition? No, but it is related. Brand recognition is directly related to trust, but not all big brands are well-liked or trusted by everybody. This is why Google's domain-blocking features and the +1 button are perhaps two of the most important updates to Google's search quality practices we've seen in a long time.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder, and these features give more say to the people. That said, there is a great potential for both of these to be abused by users. Google recently said, "as with any new ranking signal, we'll be starting carefully and learning how those signals affect search quality over time," regarding the +1 button.

Here's what Google's Matt Cutts had to say about big brands ranking in Google a couple years ago:

He said he disagrees that big brands always do well, and that Google often hears complaints from big brands who don't think they're doing as well as they should.
But relevance is about relationships as well as words on webpages. That’s why we recently started to include more information from people you know—stuff they’ve shared on Twitter, Flickr and other sites—in Google search results.

3/30/2011 11:07:00 AM

Today we’re taking that a step further, enabling you to share recommendations with the world right in Google’s search results. It’s called +1—the digital shorthand for “this is pretty cool.” To recommend something, all you have to do is click +1 on a webpage or ad you find useful. These +1’s will then start appearing in Google’s search results.

The +1 button will appear next to each search result

After pressing the +1 button, you have the option to undo the action immediately

Say, for example, you’re planning a winter trip to Tahoe, Calif. When you do a search, you may now see a +1 from your slalom-skiing aunt next to the result for a lodge in the area. Or if you’re looking for a new pasta recipe, we’ll show you +1’s from your culinary genius college roommate. And even if none of your friends are baristas or caffeine addicts, we may still show you how many people across the web have +1’d your local coffee shop.

The beauty of +1’s is their relevance—you get the right recommendations (because they come from people who matter to you), at the right time (when you are actually looking for information about that topic) and in the right format (your search results). For more information about +1, watch this video:

So how do we know which +1’s to show you? Like social search, we use many signals to identify the most useful recommendations, including things like the people you are already connected to through Google (your chat buddies and contacts, for example). Soon we may also incorporate other signals, such as your connections on sites like Twitter, to ensure your recommendations are as relevant as possible. If you want to know who you're connected to, and how, visit the “Social Circle and Content” section of the Google Dashboard.

To get started +1’ing the stuff you like, you’ll need to create a Google profile—or if you already have one, upgrade it. You can use your profile to see all of your +1’s in one place, and delete those you no longer want to recommend. To see +1’s in your Google search results you’ll need to be logged into your Google Account.

We’ll be slowly rolling out +1’s, starting in English on Google.com. If you can’t wait to start seeing +1’s, we’ll soon let you opt-in to the launch by visiting our experimental search site. Initially, +1’s will appear alongside search results and ads, but in the weeks ahead they’ll appear in many more places (including other Google products and sites across the web). If you’re an advertiser and want to learn more about how the +1 button works on search ads and websites, visit our AdWords blog.

We’re confident that +1, combined with all of the social content we’re now including in search, will mean even better, more relevant results than you get today.

Each time a year ends, we encounter countless bloggers and writers who share their thoughts about the incoming year. Some predictions are theoretically supported and some are just plain wild guesses. Predicting what's in store for the next year is almost a tradition for writers, even those not involved in SEO and Internet marketing. Sports writers, business analysts, music critics, and amateur writers - they all follow this unsung tradition. Many think that this tradition is worth following because nailing a wild guess or a well-researched fact means only one thing: respect from your readers.

It's only the third month of the year but some predictions from last year have become realities. People didn't ever expect that the realization would be this quick, but, unbelievably, many predictions are coming true right now.

The Power of Content Length

This was a common prediction that was heavily criticized. I read on some blogs last year that Google would be considering a site's content length as a determining factor for site ranking. Experts and SEO veterans commented that this was an amateur's prediction, but they all ended up wrong. As a result of this latest algorithm update, many guest blogging sites have increased their minimum article length to 450 words, and some are requiring even lengthier articles. Perhaps this recent update caused content-related terrors to some SEO geeks. They'll just have to remember that quality is still better than quantity.

Mobile Search Growth

Both local and global search benefited from the rise of high-tech phones which provide consumers mobile Web browsing. The growing rate of free Wi-Fi zones over the country also made browsing even more accessible to mobile phone users. Mobile browsing changed the way people use the Internet. Browsing the Web has become a daily part of people's lives - not only Americans and Europeans but also people from highly developed Middle Eastern and Asian countries like Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Qatar and Dubai.

Social Media Expansion

2010 was the year of Facebook and Twitter. Countless companies vied for the most numbers of "likes" and "followers", not only for branding and popularity purposes but for online presence strength as well. These two social media giants have become major advertising tools. No SEO campaign would be complete without social media and no advertising method would be fruitful without Facebook and Twitter accounts. Social media expansion is an advertising basic for many businesses.

Although confirmed as a hoax, the rumor of Facebook closure struck many businesses. It isn't easy to find a social networking site as powerful and effective as Facebook. The shocked Tweets from many businesses owners that day prove that advertising and SEO without social media is impossible. A business' online presence is major determining factor of success.

Website Speed

It took a year for all SEO practitioners to understand the value of site speed in SEO. Google first announced that site speed would be part of their algorithm in 2009, but it wasn't until late 2010 that a majority of website owners seriously incorporated it in their SEO strategies. It's not a surprise that many site owners are now aware of site speed's importance. There are reports that many businesses suffered a major decline in rankings because they took site speed for granted.

Site speed can be a determining factor for website traffic. With the millions of websites available today, a slow-loading website can force a viewer to transfer to a faster site that can provide them the information they need.

Other Search Engines

Google is still the leading and most reliable search engine today and the main reason we obsess about search algorithms and rankings. Some business owners pay large sums of money just to get their sites to the top of Google's search results. Google has set the yardstick in Web search and brought balance and fairness to the competition for rankings, so that anyone can now get first page search result placement. But, there are still other search engines we can focus on. Not all Web users rely on Google to find what they need. There is still a significant percentage of users who prefer other search engines that you too should consider when doing your SEO. Yahoo! was once the leader of the search game, and it's realistic to think that there are remaining Yahoo! loyalists out there who put less importance on Google results. Then there is Bing, the Microsoft search engine that draws yóung Web users because of its homepage and features.

Bing and Yahoo! are continually improving their search algorithms because they know they have a large following and an increasing number of users. It's fairly certain that these two search giants are making plans to erode Google's current standing as the Web's dominant search engine.

The Reincarnation of Blogs

Blogs didn't ever really go out of style. Business owners use blogs to reach a wider sector of their target market and audience. Many have invested time in establishing domain authority and positive online reputation management, temporarily putting link building aside. Some articles previously stated that "link building is dead", making SEO practitioners abandon the method and focus on other SEO strategies. However, many experts have reinstated and proved link building's ability to provide traffic and rankings. Link building is becoming popular again, and we all know that the best way to practice effective link building is through blogging.

In addition, local search's popularity has made blogging more appealing to a local audience. There are blogs today that specifically cater to a locality. Blogs, treated as micro websites, have proved their worth to local businesses, making blogging the most effective way of building links and networks.

Local Search Dominance

Global search has become popular over the past few years, but many people choose to concentrate on local search to get more specific results. As local search continues to escalate its way to dominance, the strength of the American local market today can be attributed to the growing number of local search users and the improvement of local SEO methods. The strength of site authority, anchor texts, and traditional link building is evident this year. Behind this strength are the ever-growing Local Listing (e.g. Google Maps Optimization) and SEO Resellers that focus solely on providing and introducing SEO to the local business scene.
